Introductory Information to Independent Music Sales Websites
There are a ton of websites out there that let independent bands and musicians sell their music online. They all have their pluses and minuses, different prices, packages, and services. For example, some don't allow you to sell mp3s, some only allow you to sell mp3s. That's a lot to sort through on your own. This is where our website comes in: to help you figure out what each site is offering quickly and easily. Careful though, because what we have here is not written in stone - pricing and packages change, so you have to check out the site yourself for the very latest. The user-submitted reviews will help guide you towards which services are doing a good job and which aren't. Visit our profiles/reviews page to read the profiles and reviews.
My best advice (although I'm not a musician, it's pretty sound advice in any arena) is to determine what it is your goals are, then find a site that helps you do that. For instance, if you just want to upload mp3s and sell them online, look for a website that specializes in it or gets great reviews for that service. If you want some distribution services as well as sales, then focus in on that. Use our filter to find exactly what you are looking for! What I'm saying is clearly not rocket science, but sometimes it's helpful to see it written out.
Keep a few things in mind when browsing through the websites:
- Figure out what you want, then find a site that does that. Just like in anything, set a goal first of what you want.
- Read the fine print before joining an OMC. We will give an overview of costs and restrictions, but we can't cover every detail. Plus, we can't keep up-to-the-minute details on the sites, so at times our information may be out of date (we're always trying to keep it current, though).
- Is it important to you that you can link to your website? Not all OMCs will allow that. FYI, google loves links that point to your website if you're concerned about showing up in the search engines.
- Some sites will limit your licensing/distribution rights by joining them. We can give you a heads up about it on this site, but be sure to read the details for yourself.
