Amazon

Amazon isn't your typical community, but so popular I thought it worth mentioning here. You don't get your own page, like most of these, but it's a way to sell and expose your music. Yes, you can sell digital music through Amazon digital. And I tried to email Amazon digital to get info, but each time got an auto-response that had nothing to do with my email, and did not promise any future contacts by customer service. This profile last updated 2008-05-09.

Services:
  • sell your mp3s
  • sell your CDs
  • allows users to preview your music
  • only allows preview clips (not full-length) of music
  • allows listeners to rate your music
  • allows users to leave comments
  • Other services: Note: You can't sell mp3s on "amazon advantage", which is where you sell CDs - but apparently there is an amazon advantage digital for mp3s. Try as I might, I could not get info on it.
Costs:
  • a recurring fee of $29.95 per year
  • 55% of each CD sale
*-heads up: I was unable to verify this information with Amazon. Either I couldn't find their email address, or my emails to customer service were not returned

My experience is with the UK branch of Amazon. I have sold a few CDs through them, but I have a big complaint with their customer service department. They don't understand your question, however clear you try to make it, and their answers tend to be either standard (and unsatisfactory) responses to FAQs (which don't cover your particular query, otherwise you wouldn't be asking the question) or in such poor English as to be virtually incomprehensible. It often takes three or four tries before you can get the exact nature of your query through to them and obtain a meaningful answer.
