CD Baby

Low-cost high-rep place to sell your music. I'm pretty sure everyone in online indie music knows about CD Baby.

Looks pretty good all around. Default clip-length is 2 minutes, but you can ask them to modify it. A website visitor asked me to point out that they'll sell you a barcode for a relatively inexpensive $20. This profile last updated 2008-06-19.

Services:
  • sell your mp3s
  • sell your CDs
  • distribute music to other outlets
  • allows users to preview your music
  • only allows preview clips (not full-length) of music
  • upload as many songs as you want
  • allows users to leave comments
  • you can link back to your website
  • allows you to contact users/fans
  • Other services: You send them CDs, they do the rest. They turn them into mp3s, get it set up for you, etc. When people purchase your music, you can get their email address to contact them (but be nice, don't spam them to death).
Costs:
  • one time fee of $35
  • 9% of each mp3 sale
  • a flat fee of $4.00 per CD sale
  • Other costs: The 35 dollar fee is per album. Read their services page to see why, it seems to makes sense.

I am new to the CD Baby site but the user-friendly website, with its no-fuss approach and clean lines, gives me every confidence. I like the founder's mission statement, his extremely helpful articles and the News items section. Also impressive is the fact that the staff respond to e-mails quickly and in literate English, giving the impression that they actually understand the question, unlike the UK branch of Amazon. Everything worked flawlessly, turnaround time was quick, and helpful e-mails arrived, informing me of the state of progress on my account. Although it's such a large enterprise it manages to sound highly personal, like a large family. Now all I need is some sales!

I am relatively new to this site. I found that it was simple and easy to set up. The $35.00 fee seems reasonable, and they do a good job displaying your CD. It was a quick turnaround time. The negative side is that there are so many CD's submitted, which makes it competitive. I have not sold a single CD on their site yet, and I have to wonder if I will.
